The summer language courses for international students are organised by the Ministry of Education and Science of Bulgaria in cooperation with local universities. The programme may include intensive language lessons (focusing on grammar and phonetics practice, vocabulary development, conversational skills, etc.) or a series of lectures on culture, history, literature and local realia. Before the course begins, students are usually divided into study groups according to their language skills, usually on the basis of a placement test. Classes, led by experienced native speakers, are often combined with an accompanying events consisting of guided tours, visits to museums and monuments, film evenings and theatre performances.
The summer courses of Bulgarian language are organized by the Sofia University of St. Clement of Ohrid and the Veliko Tarnovo University of St. Cyril and Methodius. Both courses are held on similar dates in July. The choice of the preferred host university is up to the applicant.
